The Great Chesapeake Bay Swim Event Day Schedule – 4.4 Mile Swim

"Rain or Shine"

 

          5:30 a.m.       Volunteer Staff arrives.
                                  Setup bag-drop and packet pick-up areas.

                                          Meet at Sandy Point State Park – Beach House area.

 6:00 – 7:30       4.4  &  1 MILE SWIM Shuttle buses begin departures from the Park & Ride on the eastern shores (see directions) to Sandy Point State Park.
(buses are marked for each event - only 4.4 buses go to Sandy Point State Park -- NO SPECTATORS PERMITTED ON 4.4 BUSES.  SPECTATORS MAY USE ONLY THE 1 MILE SHUTTLE BUSES FOR TRAVELING FROM AND TO HEMINGWAY'S MARINA FOR THE 1 MILE SWIM EVENT AND VIEW THE 4.4 FINISH.  BUSES WILL MAKE PERIODIC TRIPS TO & FROM THE PARK & LOCK DURING THE DAY.)  4.4 SWIMMERS DO NOT DRIVE TO SANDY POINT STATE PARK & LEAVE YOUR CAR THERE!  THERE WILL BE NO TRANSPORTATION BACK TO THE PARK ONCE THE SWIM BEGINS.

 6:00                 Beach Start Check-in fencing to be set-up.
                        Separate check-in for each wave start.
Swimmers wear the individually coded timing chip on their ankle.  When called, each wave walks over the ground receiver mats, and are recorded as entering the start pen for their wave start.

 6:30 – 8:00       Packet Pick-Up with MANDATORY photo i.d. check-in
                         & hand marking, at Sandy Point State Park

 8:30                 Pre-Race Swim Meeting - Conducted by Chuck Nabit, event director.  Question and answer session included.

                                    Beach and Water emptied and Start Pen security in place

             9:00                 Wave 1 – Check in begins at the beach start pen

                                    Final boat check in – command post up and running

                                    Medical support all ready -- Start Side

             9:20                 Wave 1 – Lead Boat in position

             9:30                 Wave 1 – STARTS*  (SWIM CAPS:  NEON ORANGE)

             9:31                 Wave 2 – check in begins at start pen

                                     Wave 2 – Lead boat in position

             9:45                 Wave 2 – STARTS*  (SWIM CAPS:  NEON YELLOW)

             9:50                 Break down of Start Pen

             10:15               Bulk of Swimmers around Mile 1

             10:20               GCBS Staff leaves Sandy Point State Park

             10:30               Mile 1 – Time Cutoff

             10:50               Finish Chutes and Control Area in Position
                                    on the eastern shores at Hemingways Marina

             11:15               Approximate finish time for first swimmer

                                    Mile 2 – Time Cutoff

              11:40               Approximately one-half of the swimmers finish

                         Ongoing Swimmer Accountability between U.S. Coast Guard and timer's accountability by Lin-Mark Computer Sports.

             12:00               Mile 3 – Time Cutoff

             12:40               Approximately three-fourths of the swimmers finish

             12:45               Mile 4 – Time Cutoff

             1:10                 Mile 4.4 – Time Cutoff – Race Finish

                                    Last Swimmer – Final Accountability

            2:00                 Approximate time for the 4.4 Awards Ceremony

 ·       These are anticipated start times.  The Race Director reserves the right to vary the start time to account for deviations from the predicted tide and current conditions, as indicated by NOAA.  Therefore, a start window of between 9:00 am and 10:00 am has been established to allow maximum flexibility.
